How to get a Golden Visa in Portugal, Costs for the family

If one wishes to bring their family, who lives abroad at the moment, to Portugal with them, is that possible?

The short answer is – yes. The national legislation of the country of Portugal recognises the right to family reunification with those who live outside of the country.
There is no limit to the numb er of family members one may bring over, however, there is a requirement in place that demands that the children be younger than eighteen, or dependent upon the initial applicant throughout the five years of the visa application.

The national law of the country of Portugal recognises the following family members to be eligible for the Portuguese family reunification Golden Visa program
–  The spouse of the initial applicant;
– The minor dependent children of the initial applicant;
– The minors who have been adopted by the initial applicant or by the couple;

– The parents of the initial applicant;
– Family members that are under the custody of the initial applicant.

 

If one is holding a Portuguese student permit, is their family able to join them?

The non-EU nationals who hold a Portuguese student permit are eligible to be accompanied by their parents, minor or dependent children, their spouse’s children, or any minor child that has been adopted into the family.
One will be required to provide proof of their partnership and they will nee to apply for the adequate visas and permits that they need.

Can one request a family reunification Portuguese Golden Visa for their twenty-one year old child?

The national law of the country of Portugal allows for family reunification with children who are fully aged – eighteen plus – if they comply with the following –
– If the child is dependent on the couple or either of the parents;
– If the child is single;
– If the child is studying in Portugal.

In these cases, one will be required to submit specific documentation.

Can the relatives of the initial applicant join them if they have a temporary residency permit?

One’s relatives may apply for the family reunification for the same duration as the temporary permit is valid – These are typically issued for a maximum period of five years in Portugal.
Their relatives will then be granted a renewable permit, although they will have to prove that they have sufficient required funds when applying.

Can one bring their partner that they are not married to when applying for the family reunification Golden Visa program?

The short answer is – yes. The Portuguese family reunification Golden Visa is allowed with a non-marital partnership, whether the partner is residing inside or outside of the country of Portugal. Nevertheless, the relationship must be recognised under the law.
