The History of The Baixa District Lisbon

Situated in the Southern corner of the European continent, the country of Portugal has experienced plenty of history. On the eleventh of November in 1755, one of the strongest

recorded earthquakes in the world, an enormous tsunami, and ruinous fires had caused devastation to the Baixa district of the city of Lisbon, among others. Following this natural disaster, the king and the prime minister of the country of Portugal had begun the efforts to rebuild the city of Lisbon and make it great again. A full month after the ruined Baixa district became a victim of the disaster, Manuel da Maja had presented his plans for the reconstruction of the city of Lisbon. Less than a full year later, all debris had been cleared out and the work had begun. Large squares, big avenues, and wide streets now stand where tragedy once hit.
