Telephones and Mobile Phones
Portugal’s telephone communication systems are generally kept up to a very high standard, and the service is mainly provided by Portugal Telecom(PT).
Portugal Telecom is not the only telephone service provider. Some alternative examples of service provider companies are Novis and World Telecom, but Portugal Telecom is still the main owner of line rentals.
Portugal Telecom Empresas is a separate department within the Portugal Telecom company operating system that deals exclusively with business and corporate telecommunication. However, you can only be eligible to apply for and use their services if you have proof of existence of business in Portugal.
Post offices in most towns still provide phones for public use. To make a public call, you can use cash or special phone cards that you may also buy at a local post office, or at newspaper stands.
Nowadays, the mobile service network is much more widely spread throughout the country and it has better coverage than fixed-line phone network. TMN, Vodaphone, and Optimus are three major mobile phone service providers.
There are two way to go about purchasing a mobile phone in Portugal: You can buy it on contract or choose the pay-as-you-go option. As for putting credit on your phone, there are three main options to go about it in Portugal: You can transfer it directly from your bank account, you can pay it via telephone, or you can pay by cash in one of the many mobile phone shops, or at any newspaper stand.
