In this series of articles we will be discussing Baixa, the heart of neoclassical elegance of Lisbon and why investing in property in this region is a good idea for you.
Rossio – From Cattle Market to the Busiest Square in Lisbon
The Rossio square is the ancient heart of Lisbon. Like Baixa, as well as many other parts of Lisbon, it was destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1755, only to be rebuilt again afterwards.
From cattle market and public execution spot, the purposes of which the square served in the past, Praça Dom Pedro IV today hosts a vast number of cafés instead, and has progressed to be the unarguably busiest square in all of Lisbon.
“Nicola” is arguably one of the most famous cafés that can be found on the Rossio Square. Should you decide to visit this café, you can take your taste buds on the journey of enjoying some of the best Portuguese sweets.
This exact café was the place where Fernando Pessoa himelf wrote many of his greatest works.
Moreover, just northeast of the Rossio Square, Rua das Portas de Santo Antão holds a vast number of seafood restaurands which are sure to delight any seafood-aficionados.
The Queen Maria II National Theater can be found right at the end of this magnificent square, and just over the square towers, one can find the majestic São Domingos Church. This astonishing piece of Christian history has miraculously survived three earthquakes over the last five hundred years.
Right outside the church’s door you can see numerous locals fortifying themselves with Ginja, a sweet Portuguese brandy – A type of cherry liqueuer – that is traditionally seved in small cups.
If you find yourself strolling through this beauitful neighborhood, do not be surpised if you your eyes continue to wander up to the Rossio Square Train Station.
It was built in the Neo-Mauline style, a characteristically Portuguese style of architecture which had revived the gothic style of the 16th century, and this magnificent historic building is truly an architectural feast for the eyes.
The Tower of Belém is another quite famous and truly marvelous example of this flamboyant style.
