The Low-Down on Alfama – The Modern Chick and The Traditional Charm

The Low-Down on Alfama

If you find yourself in Lisbon and get to spend some time in this marvelous city, it will not be long before you find yourself weaving through the cobbled streets of Alfama and it will be even sooner until you are swept off your feet by the most remarkable and unique charm of this lovely part of Lisbon. In our series of articles by the title of “The Low-Down on Alfama” we will talk about this utterly charming Lisbon neighborhood and all the magic it has to offer to its visitors.

The Modern Chic and The Traditional Charm

It is the uniquely intimate atmosphere of Alfama that has drawn an increasing number of artists and visionaries, such as Monica Belluci and Yves St Laurent, to purchase properties in this lovely neighborhood, which has added a fresh undertone of bobo-chic to the neighborhoods in which the smiling Portuguese senhoras sell home-made ginja, a type of cherry liqueur, from their front porch. The architecture and the layout of Alfama resemble that of a labyrynth where the divisions from one section of Alfama to the other are notoriously unclear – So if you find yourself confused and a little bit lost when in Alfama, you are not the only one.

Still, thanks to the Fado Museum and a multitude of restaurants and remarkable viewpoints that are located in this neighborhood, many first-time Lisbon visitors flock to this lovable part of the city. This charming sprawling neighborhood is spread across four different subsections – from Se Cathedral located near Baxia to the Church of São Vincent, across the Market of Santa Clara, which is set right underneath the bohemian neighborhood of Graça, and to the majestic Pantheon, a Temple to the Gods the construction of which span over four centuries – from the 16th to the 20th.
It’s in the Alfama that the streets bustle with the most colorful flea and antique markets in the city each Tuseday and Saturday. These markets are like tiny, charming windows to the past, where you can find anything from antique ceramics crafted in Macau, a former colony of Portugal, to vintage furniture from the 50’, and all that at extremely low prices, as well as vintage and rare vinyl records dotted amongst the everyday knick-knackery.
