The country of Portugal has been listed in the top ten of the ranking list in which the countries were ranked according to the ease at which one can make friends there as an expat.
This finding has been published in the latest Expat Insider survey, which is annually conducted by the InterNations and which includes eighteen thousand respondents.
Globally speaking, it has been revealed that only fifty seven percent of the expats worldwide find it easy to make new friends when they are aboard, and an even lower share of forty five percent has stated that making friends with the locals in their new country of residency was easy.
The survey has revealed that the country of Mexico is the single
best country for making friends abroad, and it is followed by Barhain, Serbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Uganda, Colombia, Taiwan, Israel, and Portugal. These results serve to highlight the positive impact that a good and reliable social network can have on people who are moving abroad – The expats who live in one of the top ten countries have reported that not only do they find it easy to make new friends, but that they are also substantially happier with their lives than the global average. On the other hand, at the other end of the scale, the expats who live in the countries of Kuwait – the 68th out of the 68th countries -, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Norway, Finland, Austria, and Estonia – which is ranked as the 59th – have reported that they find it hardest to make friends in their respective host countries. In a similar manner, those who live in these countries have also reported that they are below average happy with their lives in general – Only the expats in the country of Estonia have exceeded the global average.
Close to two thirds of the expats – sixty four percent – have stated that they find it easy to make friends in their new country of residency – vs. forty five percent globally -, and seventy five percent have stated that making new friends in general is easy too – vs. fifty seven percent globally.
