Príncipe Real Property Guide – The Many Faces of the Chiado District

In this series of articles we will be discussing Príncipe Real, an enchanting and prestigious neighborhood located in the heart of Lisbon and why investing in property in this region is a good idea for you.

The Many Faces of the Chiado District

Should you decide to purchase or invest in a property in Príncipe Real, you should start bracing yourself for your new life in one of the most exclusive areas of the Portuguese capital.
The name of the district translates as “Royal Prince” in English and it has been given to this luxurious Lisbon neighborhood after the firstborn son of Queen Maria II.
It is no secret that a lot of wealthy families and nobles of the past have lived in this

neighborhood and walked down its cobblestone streets.

Many of these places have been kept and maintained by these families over many centuries, so even today you can find them easily and visit them yourself without much trouble at all. There was a time period in the past when the district of Chiado was also well known for its unique combination of antique shops and gay scene – From our other article by the title of “Chiado Property Guide – Where to Buy Property in Chiado, Portugal”: “Principe Real, sat atop a hill where from it overlooks the city, is the gay quarter of Lisbon. In addition to a number of gay and lesbian clubs in this area, the Chiado neighborhood also hosts a variety of galleries and antique shops that line up along Rua da Escola Politecnica and Rua Dom Pedro V. This rather peculiar combination of different establishments and entertainment opportunities gives the Chiado district a distinct atmosphere and a very unique feeling.
And if that was not enough, numerous beautiful 19th century townhouses line up along the Rua da St. Marcal, and at the centre of the district there is the verdant and tranquil Praca das Flores.”

This, however, is slowly changing nowadays. Today, Príncipe Real is instead becoming a serious shopping destination amonng both locals and international shoppers alike.
