Baixa Property Guide – History and Dining
In this series of articles we will be discussing Baixa, the heart of neoclassical elegance of Lisbon and why investing in property in this region is a good idea for you.Baixa – The Neoclassical World of PortugalBefore it became one of the major hotspots of Lisbon that it is today, Baixa was once completely destroyed. In 1755 one of the most vigorous earthquakes in human history had hit Lisbon and destroyed most of this beautiful historic city, including the district of Baixa which was ruined completely. The city was rebuilt by Marques de Pombal, whose city renovation project completely ignored the original outlines of the city and instead a neoclassical neighborhood par exellance that Baixa is today has been created.Pombal’s idea was to renovate various streets of Lisbon in such manner that each street is dedicated to housing workshops and stores for certain trades and crafts. His intentions are still reflected, even today, in the street names such as Rua da Prata, the Silversmiths’ Street, and Rua dos Sapateiros, the Cobblers’ Street, which can be found all throughout Lisbon.
Portugal’s independence from Spain is symbolized in the majestic Praça dos Restauradores, where the elegant architecture and the wide boulevards remind one of Paris in the 19th century.Even now, there has been mention of plans for further renovation of this area by the Portuguese government and it is everyone’s hope that this charming area of Lisbon will be recognized as World Heritage Site. The Finest Dining ExperiencesA fine selection of high end resaurants and luxurious hotels alike can be found in the neighborhood of Baixa.“Alma” is one of quite a few Michellin star awarded restaurants in this area, and one should absolutely head there if they are looking for a fine dinining experience. The careful preparation of distinct flavors at a consisnently high standard and the high quality of ingridients that it uses for its most excellent menu are what Alma is most highly praised for.Another Michellin star awarded restaurant that one should at least consider visiting when they are in Baixa is Tavares Rico. This high end restaurant was open in 1784 and it is one of the oldest restaurants in Lisbon, and certainly one of the most renowned in all of Portugal.
